Nick Cave was a dark songwriter but I love the duet with Kylie. Inspired use of her "safe" image back then and I think it stands up well now but for the partner violence and murder.

But for? Again, murder ballad is a genre and the entire album was a tribute to that. There's always been depictions of murder in art, it's part of the exploration of the human condition.

Thinking about my previous post about Black Sabbath, "Generals gathered in their masses / Just like witches at black masses" might be considered to be a bit pants were it not for the fact that it was delivered by Ozzy, and is therefore bostin. But theoretically, were it not for Ozzy, it would be cringeworthy.

That is the point though, what was acceptable changes with time and potentially becomes unacceptable. It's the same with other cultural things. Robertson jam gollywog symbol went by the wayside for example bit was once a much loved branding.

It does also depend on how things are done. If the majority of murders in songs work out to be men murdering their female partners, wives or girlfriends then you can bet as a genre in time it'll get cancelled. There are songs that no longer get played because of changed times and a more enlightened view on what is unacceptable.

But you can't say it's a good song apart from the murdery bit when the murdery bit is the whole song.
