What is it that the Italians put into their steel that makes it quite so reactive?
The story I heard was after WWII the Soviets scavenged all the battlefields for abandoned German tanks and put them in storage either for scrap or possible use. In the 1970s, the decision was made to melt them all down into steel for using again. However, it was discovered that by 1942 the Germans were using really poor quality steel, full of impurities so the reclaimed steel was terrible and really only any good for construction.
But, in the 70s the Italians were flirting with Communism and getting quite friendly with the Soviets. In a gesture of socialist fraternalism, the Soviets sold them a job lot of "top quality auto-grade steel from the finest worker's collective factories".
And that's why Italian cars of the 70s were rustbuckets.
