Well as for fitness it depends on what specifically you measure fitness as blah blah blah. Personally the type of ride I do depends on my mood really. I quite often relish the idea of climbing the biggest steepest hill I can find and other times I just spin along a flat course. A bit of everything is always good.
I suppose as a default my favorite course would have mostly rolling terrain but with a few big steep hills followed by long, slight downhills

Hi all
What's the general opinion from the cycling population of shorter hillier rides versus longer flattish routes?
Personally I've been getting more satisfaction on the lumpier rides as I find the climbs more challenging. Although I did enjoy the flat metric century I completed two weeks ago. What's the best for improving fitness?
So let's hear your views on this subject
do a long flat ride at an average speed of 23 mph and say it's not a challenge!

Yes, it's a very hilly suburb of Melbourne. If you exit from the Google Street View, and zoom the map out, you'll see where it is.

Rolling countryside is probably my favourite. Some nice lumps here and there but constantly changing views. Rutland is quite lumpy more than rolling but nice!

Rolling Warwickshire countryside, just lumpy enough to make it interesting but not that lumpy it becomes a major challenge.
