nice bright day no cloud so decided to go for a ride ,
Roads were pretty good i though !

4 mile in i aproached a downhill stretch
country b road half way down checked speedo 35mph , quick glance ahead then ........
Woke up on the road with car driver asking if i was ok ,
head thumping and not feeling good at all .

Apparentley i hit black ice and and hit the road bum first then head ,
Helmets crack from nape of neck to the top and wrecked .

Mannaged to ride home Feeling distinctly not right on arrival sick dizzy etc quick vissit to a and e and an xray later i find out ive got mild concussion .

Back home now (this happened just after 6pm tonight ) hot chocolate cheese on toast and feeling a lot better still bit woolly headed but ok .

Please please please wear a helmet
Doctor said it saved me from a fractured skull or worse ,
i will be replacing my helmet asap

Ouch, I hope you feel better soon!

I must admit I've become a bit nervous while decending recently with all the ice about.

Oh and hows the bike

Very lucky glad to hear you are O.K. Catch 22 at the moment, everybody wants to get out on their bike ,but you dont want to be layed up for weeks after an off. its a tough call...

I am glad to hear you have survived your crash relatively unscathed, but as this is in Beginners, I am concerned that the only advice you offer after this incident is in regard to helmet wearing when improved observational skills may have helped avoid the crash entirely.
Road users should be wary in conditions you describe, "bright day with no cloud" at this time year is indicative of high barometric pressure with low overnight temperatures leading to frost and icy road conditions. Also, B roads are low priority on winter gritting programmes so lower speeds are appropriate.
Keep Safe out there.

Ouch, heal quick and take it easy for a few days.

How's the bike ? (someone had to ask !)

Ouch indeed, I hope you heal quickly, and that the bike is not damaged :-).

I have to agree with snorri:

With 20:20 hindsight:

35mph

on cold day

on an ungritted B-road

is perhaps a little too enthusiastic.
The main lesson I would take would be to be more cautious under these conditions.
(I don't want to start off another endless helmet debate - wear one or not as you see fit)

Just before I read this post I was getting ready for an afternoon ride but because I intended useing a side road I decided to walk part of my route instead. Just as well I did. The UCR I was going to ride on was deadly and it took me all my time to walk on it. Infact I spent more time on the grass verge than I did on the road. 3/4 of the way along is 1 in 4 very narrow hill climb and on this I was virtually walking / creeping up the side of a fence. Thanks to the posting I was saved from what could have been a nasty situation.

Black Ice everywhere !!!

This morning went out from Wycombe to Lane End to Stokenchurch and return via West Wycombe.
Just past Cadmore End a short hill, all going well, then car overtakes me, then collides with oncoming car, that one spins round coming towards me.
I stopped (easy as not going fast up hil) and jumped onto grass verge - in the end car missed me and bike by about a metre. Everyone was fine, body damage to cars, bike untouched. When I pushed the bike up to the other car I noticed the black ice !!!

Indeed avery lucky escape for me !!!
Gave my details as a witness - I had the best view point

Shook mey a bit, I carried on pushing to the top of the hill then riding gingerly along. After Stokenchurch on the A40 passed a policeman inspecting i car which had gone down the embankment. He told me they had loads of these accidents this morning! On my home stretch then another car parked normal but hit on the onside rear corner.

Anyway very interesting ride this morning with some new experiences I wouldn't like to have again !!!

We had heavy rain late last night must have washed off the salt.Cold again this morning. I decided to stick to main roads but still had one heart stopping slide. Heard a car spun off in the same spot later.

Glad you were OK peelywally Safe Riding and good luck to everyone.

Glad to hear you survived and get better soon.

Good positive helmet message I thought, My helmet has saved me twice from head injury and no one elses opinion can can detract from that.
The fact is that if you are going to bang your head then it wont hurt as much if you have a helmet on!

Me and my mate went out this morning, riding down a lane that went down into a dip and back up. In the dip was a big puddle across the lane, so we slowed down to go through it, good job we did cos as soon as we came out of the water we both went down (synchronised) on sheet ice.
Luckily no injuries or bike damage, and the rest of our ride was tentative to say the least
