This.

An energy drink (always expensive) that will fuel you is, by definition, not low calorie.

Another vote for this. Just a glass of fruit juice mixed with water works wonders for me prior to an early run/ride - just enough carbs and sugars to get you going.

I would also suggest just trying a few of the suggestions, everyone is different, you need to find out what works for you as an individual.

Maybe a bit late to reply, but though I'd add my advice anyway.

I'm exactly the same as you - I like to exercise on an empty stomach. I've never done much cycling before work, but for a while I was doing my longest runs (jogs, really) on a friday morning, and found I did need something. I tended to run on an empty stomach up to about 10 miles, and anything above that I drank half a bottle of Gatorade.

The whole concept of "low cal" energy drink just doesn't make sense. Better to drink the proper stuff, but just limit it to the amount you need.

I know that a lot of people reckon that you need to eat breakfast, but I just feel sick if I do. I ran a marathon once on an empty stomach and 3 bottles of Gatorade - that stuff is rocket fuel.

You'll find the low calorie energy drinks on the shelf next to the tartan paint, left handed screwdrivers, and glass hammers.

I have stopped using energy drinks due to the sugar content and it's effect on my teeth. I now make sure I fuel well before a ride with oats etc. On the ride I tend to use Electrolyte tabs High Five or Sis and take a bannana with me if it is a ride over say 50 miles. Not had any problems with this to date.

I find a ride of up to 1.5 to 2 hrs is fine with just water or hi5 Zero. Have a bit of toast or a bowl of weetabix if you can stomach it.

By definition an energy drink would be high in calories..... is like asking for an economical racing car I think
