Low calorie energy drink?

I tend to train approx 45 minute after getting up. I don't however really feel like eating before training as I am currently trying to lose weight
I was wondering if there are any low calorie energy drinks which will give me bit of a carb hit which I can drink after getting up

I don't think you'll get low calorie, high carb as carbs are high in calories, no? Lucozade Lite is around 50 cals but full of artificial sweetners

Thanks for the reply, is not the milk/protien combination the wrong type of drink (mainly protien) for a pre-ride drink, I though it needed to be high carb?

You didn't say your training was cycling, I assumed the gym...although this being a cycling forum... :whistle:


I just assumed that high carb = high cal - most seem to consume bananas and porridge in the morning. Could you do banana and a glass of milk/juice. I don't know why protein would be wrong? presumably you are building strength too.
Are you a semi-pro rider or just looking to lose weight and get fit?

Sorry should have been clearer. My training is cycling, I tend to go out approx 30/40 minutes after waking so anything solid is a struggle for me.
My goal first and foremost is to lose weight and get fit

My limited understanding was that I should go out fueled up and fuel up again on return with carbs.

If you want to lose weight - eat less and exercise more (and, yes, I know it's very difficult to follow that guidance). Most of the "advice" that's dished out about nutrition is either based on dodgy science or is targetted at the super-fit. "High-carb" does mean "high-cal".

I'd suggest a light, but solid, breakfast (low-sugar cereal/porridge/toast) before or after you ride.

Normally 90 minutes to 2 hours occasionally shorter 1 hour rides if weather is not so good

surely "low calorie energy drink" is an oxymoron: the whole point of an energy drink is to provide fuel (calories) in the form of carbohydrate??!!


the old guys in my club used to do "no breakfast training" before work most days. going out for an hour with nothing more than a coffee then breakfast and into work (often on the bike). The idea being that training immediately after eating was not a good plan.

In this scientific age, that is called "bonk training" about which there are mixed views, google to see them
