Not quite true. I have Novatech hubs on two bikes. One is near silent, the other is on the acceptable side of not so loud.
I can only speak to the two sets of wheels with Novatech hubs I have, certainly have a pleasing clickety click.
Evidently they vary

I actually do turn down offers of rides with a good chum as his hubs are so annoyingly loud. It does my head in on long rides.

So if I go onto Wiggle buy a quality free hub that's compatible with Shimano and will take an 8 speed cassette , I'll be wasting my money ?

Are we speaking about 3 seperate things here hubs and hubs with free hubs and freehubs on their own , I'm just talking about free hubs and they are a thing I've seen them , and sold as free hubs attached via a thread

Anything using two toothed plates (the original unidirectional clutch, aka freewheel) design is very loud. Ones with sprung pawls, less so.

If it's very loud, it is probably slowing you down a bit more when coasting.

It's an excuse, i have a mate with noisy free hub, i make him ride at the back, he never gets on the front to take his turn, :laugh:
