There are only two ways to locate such an item.

1) Search each room of the house and outbuildings (shed, loft, garage etc) systematically. Holmsian logic dictates that when you have eliminated the possible whatever is left, however improbable must be the solution. This conventionally takes a good husband several hours and only sometimes yields results.

2) Ask your wife to spend 5 minutes searching. This method is 95% foolproof in my house.

As mentioned above, the only other way is to try and recreate from the last time they were worn. Assuming they were in the car, once you got home, what would be the next steps taken, where would the shoes travel to...

Did you leave them outside to dry? If so, foxes love taking them

Have you replaced the car since the boots were last worn…was the old car PXd? In which case they are long gawn

I'm always putting things in dreaded "sensible places" then being unable to locate.

Boots? Bottom of a wardrobe perhaps? In that box in the porch? Do you have a shed? Ever worn for gardening or DIY? Absolutely maddening.

Start looking for something else. Within 5 minutes you'll be looking inside the boots for said item. At that point forget about said item.

Strangely enough I have been to the hospital today to pick the new one up, not sure it's the right one, even the technician isn't convinced they have made the plug from the right material.

But I would be checking the plastic bag in the bottom of the old wardrobe in the garage
