Seven months ago I started work as a Recycling officer for a local nature reserve in York. I was really excited at the fact I would be making a difference to the local community, working with a fun group of people and if I finished the round on time, I would also get to use my four years of Countryside Management skills helping out on the nature reserve.

I finish my round on time, usually with three hours of the working day left. I can see that there is loads of work that needs to be done on the reserver. When I ask can I do such and such, its met with a really negative response and I'm sent to do something thats no benefit to anyone.

This is making me feel angry worthless and useless.

Look on the bright side. You had a few months of being interested in your job. That's more than most people get.

Are you sure you've not got a job for your local council? Sounds like it....

Don't do any more work than what's in your job description, they might realize they don't need someone else and have the excuse to sack them. You'll get right up the noses of your comrades! That's the mentality in the public sector!

It did say on my job description, to help out with running of the nature reserve, when you had time available. It was also mentioned during my interview.

What short memories people have.

If you finish your round with 3 hours work time left it seems the council has given you a full-time job when it only really needed to hire a part-timer. Do the decent thing and suggest you only work part-time and then you'll have no spare time at work to worry about and you'll save the taxpayers some money too.

You are obviously working at twice the rate the council expects of its employees so why not try to work more slowly by stopping for a chat/teabreak every 10 minutes or some other method?

Gromit you have my best wishes. But don't let them get you down. You seem to be doing a grand job.Unlike me you are a little too young to take early retirement.I got that feeling also.

I'd say that was only partly said in jest as that is precisely what will end up happening if things go on as they are.

I would but having a poor memory for facts and figures, being dyslexic, only good at practical tasks and hating extremely cheeky and rude children puts a stop to all that. Though I do find it easy to pass on skills that I have learned in conservation. I can teach people how to hedge lay, coppice's and pollard
trees.

Gromit, I sympathise, I found the recycling stuff in York pretty disillusioning myself as a volunteer. That people like you and Arch carry on with things like this has my respect.

OK, you don't like your job. But are there any better ones that you'd be likely to get? You've got a cushy number at the council - an undemanding job you can do in half the time allotted. I'd sit tight if I were you unless you get a better offer, and you can always take comfort in the fact that most people would kill for such an easygoing job with such an undemanding employer.
