As you've found, your fitness comes back quicker each time. I remember being told that being fit doesn't necessarily make it any easier or quicker to ride up a hill, for example, but you recover quicker at the top.
Also, if your exercise bike is recumbent, it'll be having a slightly different effect to an upright. Not a boad one, it'll still help with the aerobic stuff, it's just a slightly different set of muscles, and getting back on the upright afterwards may feel harder. I found that after two weeks on my recumbent trike on holiday this summer - the upright felt weird for ages....
If you're looking for lights on a budget - if you have a big Tesco nearby, pop in and see what they have, they have some reductions on bike kit at the mo. I got a little set of back up LEDs (a useful little extra lighting for being visible) for £3...
