So, Ive been looking for my first road bike since the summer. After months of research and help from people on this site (cheers), I decided to go for a Claud Butler Roubaix, 2008.

Well I know this isnt the greatest bike in the world (most likely far from it) but I got it for a decent price which is one of the most important things for a 17 year old.

I didnt expect to get it so soon but thankfully the parents gave me an early christmas payout.

So I went down the shop, picked it up, drove it home and went for a cycle. Well perhaps not a cycle but I did go up and down my street several times trying to get used to a road bike. I guess the toe straps and drops felt quite odd to start with (think my neighbours had a good laugh at my first wobbly attempts). But soon I got into it and the bike felt great. Everything (gears, brakes etc) felt so much better than that rusting mtb I had been riding.

Only one disapointment - Santa wont let me give it a proper ride till the 25th.

There's nothing wrong with a Roubaix as a first road bike, enjoy!

You'll be wanting to change the pedals for clipless though.

There's nothing wrong with that bike.

For me, it was a toss-up between the CB Roubaix and the Dawes Giro.

I went for the Dawes with Tiagra gearing.
The wheelset is the same, with different stickers on the hubs.

Before Chrismas Day, go round it with some good quality silicone based polish. Lube the rear mech cable adjuster, all the gear trim adjusters and squeeze the polish into the brake pivots.
Coat every spoke nipple with the polish and coat all threads with it too.
All bare cables and the AHead hex heads.

Some may disagree. I prefer a bit of weatherproofing from the outset.

What's a Roubaix (and how do you pronounce it)?
Is it a certain use/geometry of bike?

I'm never sure how its pronounce Roobaxe or Ruby ;). Its taken from the Paris - Roubaix road race (a long hard day ride over cobbles). You get quite a few things that are labled Roubaix: the spesh Roubaix (road bike), clothes (roubaix material) and the road bike the OP is reffering to a Claud Butler Roubaix, etc
