I live in Cambuslang, and its the most hilly area I know.

Im just looking to get fit at the moment, on my mtb. I can barely manage 20 minutes at a time due to the hills. Its appallng, I know. I used to be doing 30 miles rides in my younger days.

Flat, and off the road is what Im really looking for.

Any help will be brilliant.

Not off-road MTB territory but for getting some miles in on a nice flat traffic-free route, why not try going along the cycle path by the River Clyde, it's right on your doorstep if you stay in Cambuslang. It's part of the NCN 75 Glasgow to Edinburgh route and there's a 12 mile stretch known as the Clyde Corridor that runs from the SECC, via Glasgow Green to Uddingston. You can access it at the bridge across the river next to the Morrison's in Bridge St.

The bit between Shawfield and Dalmarnock is v bumpy. Lots of tree roots. From Shawfield to the City centre is pretty flat though.

Also there's meant to be a good cycling path at the new Wind turbine farm at the back of EK. Not been up there yet but one of my colleagues says its a good run.

Watch out for the bit from Bridgeton onwards, full of young neds drinking and covered with glass, if you wish to travel a bit the Strathkelvin railway path is a cracker, runs all the way from Muirhead to the foot of the Campsie's, google that one.

Ta for pointing out roughly where the path is in Muirhead bhoyjim. I tried it last week and once I found my way through Kirkintilloch, I thoroughly enjoyed it.... well apart from going back up the hill at Gartferry Rd on the way home - which I already know I don't like! Nice views of the Campsies though!

Aye once you have done it a couple of times, you'll be ready for the Campsie's themselves ;)

Whitelee Windfarm (biggest on-shore site in Europe) apparently has lots of roads for cycling but no matter how you approach it you have a few hills (not a surprise really as the turbines are at on high ground) but the cycling and views are superb - worth the effort

One you get past Uddingston there are nice tracks along the side of the Clyde to Bothwell. At Bothwell bridge there's a path that goes down to Strathclyde park. At the other end of the loch you can access Dalziel estate at Motherwell and from there take the Clyde walkway up to the Falls of Clyde at New Lanark. Enough track to make an epic day.

Has anyone done the Glasgow to the Falkirk wheel trip. I think it's about 35 miles each way.
I fancied it this year and never got round to it.

Great info. Must try that if/when the weather improves. Knees are shot so it's flat runs from now on.

It looks stunning - they've actually just opened a new visitor centre today, and their website is up & running...

http://www.whiteleewindfarm.co.uk

I can only imagine what the views must be like from up there.

Cathkin Braes is being used for 2014 Commonwealth Games MTB races and has a load of trails of various grades - well worth a visit (search for it on google maps - it shows up as a country park).
From there you can take a variety of back roads to make up some routes - round to East Kilbride or Eaglesham (and onto Whitelee Windfarm, see above).
