Looking for a road bike

Hello,

after pondering over the idea for a while, I have decided not to go ahead with re-enameling my current road bike and instead invest the £200 saved in a new bike. My current amount saved is roughly £300 and I putting more away each week from my wages. I hopefully will be able to spend around £400-600 by early-mid April, would there be anything worth looking at in that price bracket? I know what there is won't be the lightest or have the top spec components, I would just like it to work and not fall apart, that's all, I am not doing TTs or racing!!!

The sort of bike I'd be looking at would be a drop bar road bike that has to meet a few criteria, so it must at least have:

  • Eyeleted droputs and the clearance to allow the attachment of full-length mudguards and maybe a rack for light touring
  • and Have the capacity or come ready fitted with tyres 25c or above, 23c are a little too harsh for every day riding me thinks
I did consider the Giant Defy 4 2010, but the very limited clearance for 'guards on 25c tyres put me off, I have read people having problems with them.

Currently the EBC continental takes my fancy but I would like another's view on that particular bike before I fixate myself on it.

So what you people suggest that would do me? I will be commuting on this bike as well as taking it out for longer rides when I feel like it, a sportive or two isn't out of the question. I am not looking to SS or fixie, not my cup of tea and I feel even the few hills around here would defeat me, let alone the ones in Shropshire and N Wales where I plan to ride eventually.

Cheers all,

Cheers, good to see that the EBC Continental is an OK bike. It has eyelets for 'guards but a rack seems to be out of the question. I'd probably have to get a hybrid, tourer or CX before I could fit one. My Carradice bag will do for now as it is a good size for my needs ATM and can be attached to any saddle through the Q/R system.

I do like like the look of the Spesh but the lack of eyelets puts me off a bit, I'd much rather have proper 'guards over the RoadRacer MK2's I have fitted to my bike currently.

Have a look at Verenti Kilmeston at Wiggle. Sometimes the ex-demo's go for about £630 when available. They're super bikes.

The Verenti bike looks, ideal, if a little above my budget but I like it

Unfortunately due to breaking my laptop, I have had to shell out a couple hundred squids for a new one so a new bike is off the cards for the foreseeable future.
