I'm with Greg on the Brookes saddle theory, got one on each bike and i do not wear any padded shorts at all for any ride ( even the big 100+ audax's that i did this year ) Great seat and even better when they are broken in.

Thanks for all your great advice  I'm going to see if my LBS will do me either a free retrospective fit (they offer a free service on new bikes and I didn't get offered it), or at least a discount.

Might well look into saddle choice, need to measure up. I've seen people raving about brooks saddles but some people say they hate them and some people love!

Man so much to think about!

Would echo others in that sorting the points of contact will help with comfort. I spent money on decent, comfy shoes and that has proved to be worthwhile as I've stepped up the mileage. Decentish padded shorts are a must IMO if you're thinking about stepping up mileage. I paid 40-odd quid for a pair of endura shorts which is not too much and have to say they've been fantastic. Plus some decent gloves to protect the hands. I also splashed out for a pro-bike fit recently that really helped. Would deffo go back to the LBS to check out the fit as it can make a big difference.

can take ages but get the saddle position and height just right, ditto cleats, shags of good advice online, when you get it right or near enough right you wonder how you manage before

Took me ages to get mine right , a learning curve that took longer than it should as i learnt what each ache meant and untill i found helpful websites.
Remember that your fit will also change as you get fitter and get used to riding .

You say your shoes fit like a glove, is that when you are wearing a good thick pair of woollen socks?
Thick socks are the solution for cold feet, in my case!
