I think this may be a common feeling.... the looking for cycling buddies thing I mean. I had thought about it and looked on Gumtree etc. but nothing suitable. Not too keen on the idea of mass rides with beard n sandals crew nor the flash roadies  Maybe it's just a feeling of unease with meeting lots of new people in one go?

Ideally a nice friendly brunette, 5'5" with a rear thats pleasing on the eye

You have not specified the age of said brunette.;)

Hehehe, well beggars can't be choosers
I'd say mid twenties to mid/late thirties would be ideal!

I'm sure you'll find a cycling partner one day Speicher, brunette, sharp wit and interest in many of the related areas of cycling, it must happen.

As for the club thing with other people I agree.

Devon CTC is quite active - I've been a member for about a year though haven't got out of bed early enough to get out on a ride yet. We know a few of the members through doing Audax rides, they seem a friendly bunch.

There's quite a lot going on around Newton Abbot and Torbay area, well worth dropping them a line.

Just found the Torbay rides list, they all leave from Kingskerswell!

CTC run some group rides. In some area it is practically dead, in other areas a lot of rides and activity takes place. Don't know what near you would be called, Devon CTC or what.

don't worry nic, you're not alone!
I've not been able to find anyone to go for a decent ride with either. and I know that when I do decide to joint my local club I will get the snobbery of the carbon crew, casting eyes over my old steel framed bike.
I am going to join the club next year though, the guy in my local bike shop is a member and seems like a pleasent chap.

You could try a visit to your local bike shop to find out if they know of much going on in the area, chances are they will be able to suggest something suitable for you.

Failing that, i'll bring my bike down next time I come to Devon on holiday. ;)

I'd go the CTC route. Putting a card in your local supermarket is a great way to meet the local creeps and wierdos, IMO

I go on CTC rides.

On the plus side, they are regular rides and give you a bit of a commitment to get through the crappy winter and to keep on your bike.
On the negative side, they are not always local, my ride is 15 miles away, and they tend to be more older people going (milldle aged is young!). However it is company and they are in my experience good company. I dont see any barrieres to mixing with someone of a different generation.
Lets face it I am not going to get a specal invitation to go cycling with the Swedish netball team so I go with what I have available.

A couple of more plus points when going out on CTC rides are, should you have a mechanical problem, there will be lots of practical advice and help to get you going again, and should you need to abandon the ride someone will be with you to get you back. Also, joining the CTC gives you 3rd party insurance and masses of free legal advice should you need it.

It may be the wrong time of the year, but do you not have any friends who you could coax into cycling with you? That could lead to you forming a cycling group of like minded people.

Not really, my friends are either lazy, or well lazy. Much like my boyfriend, who bought a lovely shed ornament, and has used it about 5 times. I have made a friend on here but they are 40 miles away. and there doesn't seem to be anyone else close. I have no work colleagues who are near me, not sure if any of my chaps colleagues cycle (hmmm, might look into that)

i dont mind going out alone, but do you know what i mean, i'd be safer with someone else, and i could chat and pace myself against them.
