...I blame that ruffian Drury...

you may have heard this before but....

a few years back I went to a party which was basically an Austrian and Japanese affair. The Austrians were mathematicians and the like, working in the banking industry. The Japanese were singers and musicians.

I asked one of the Austrians, who worked with 'Monte Carlo sequences' what he would do when the banking boom ended.

'presumably you'd go back to Salzburg?'

'no, I would rather sweep the streets in London than go back to Salzburg, or anywhere else'.

I was reminded of this conversation when I asked our newest recruit whether he was going to stay here, or move on.

'I've tried New York, and it's dull. And Sydney's backward. I reckon London's the place to be'.

I could have pointed you a number of good local restaurants, us locals avoid the tourist places in the center, 200m in any direction would have found you good local restaurants

And a mile towards Woolwich would have brought you to the excellent Ginza Japanese restaurant - have you tried it, Brains?

Being 3 minutes from my front door, it sees quite a lot of me

What has destroyed london is northerners moving to london, usually after university, for jobs... and suddenly becoming fashion victims.

Native londoners dress like proper herberts, and that is their charm.

Gruff northeners who used to give hearty hand shakes suddenly buy duffle coats and manbags and develop airs and graces like proffering you their limp hand as if they expect you to kiss it or something.
