I was looking for some powerful battery (ie not rechargeable) front lights, as they would be useful not just here but on multi-day camping trips. Those Hope Vision ones look good but wow, I've just seen the price.

Anyone know of decent battery front lights that cost a bit less?

The classic Hope Vision One runs on AAs and wasn't all that pricey. No longer available

https://lumintop.com/product/b01/

Runs on 21700 or 18650 as per your preference.

I need to rebuild my dynamo wheel with the new dynamo under warranty. I bought a Lumintop B01 whilst dynamo was off for repair, which turned into replacement. I have found that even the low setting is mostly okay for audax, unless a particularly fast downhill or grotty small lane. Of course for audax where it’s just a single night, then medium will last the duration

I don't think Hope make the Vision 1's anymore though you may be able to get them on the bay.

Given the lights you are running use AA, I am wondering why so much powerbank? The only thing that would need recharging that much is a smartphone and only if you are on it all the time. A GPS needs for the event will be covered by 10,000mAh, less if you turn off your GPS for longer stops.

Lights? AA powered lights as back up?

What light run direct from power packs?

On Audaxes I always use cue sheets
My first x audaxes, I did too. After that, I used them as a back up (and plotted the route from them) but didn't like to have to stop at junctions etc to check directions. My trusty old GPS with its breadcrumb trail enabled me to scoot around.

I'd tried all manner of route sheet holders, even rubber banding them to my forearm, but I wanted to ride rather than read crypted directions and/or map read so a GPS made audax a more enjoyable experience for me.

My cue sheets sit on my aerobars, and I add notes to remind me where I need to turn - such as (Street to Bewdley):

Miles Route
1.2 At the end of the Roman way you will meet a small r-bout and go straight over onto Tor View Ave. Glastonbury Tor is up ahead

Not only are the cues informative but also illustrative. Nicer than a device to look at, in my opinion and experience.
I have a Wahoo which I use for miles only. In any case, even if I wanted to use it as a RWGPS device, I could never read the small screen.

True. On Audaxes I always use cue sheets, I've never had a problem with that ever running out of juice.

I don't have a problem on Audax with my devices running out either. L-E-L is a whole different proposition. Far less faff then cue sheets and as someone else has said, why look and decifer a cue sheet when you can be looking at the scenery. 👍

It does astound me to how we‘ve gone from what was essentially a simple challenge of riding your bike London to Edinburgh and back within the time limit, via a series of designated controls… To a major challenge of keeping a heap load of stuff charged, and needing more than you can comfortably carry on the bike.

ha ha! I do sympathise somewhat with this view, but ...

there are 2200 people riding, all with access to the internet. We don't hear from the people who know what they're gonna do, or are quietly figuring out the minor details i.e. most riders!

Also, we know for a fact, before The Interweb riders on PBP had tons of private support that solved these problems for them. Early editions of LEL it was less so, but there have been plenty of spouses-driving-campervans over the years.

^^^ 'tis true. There are still old school audaxers that turn up and ride too. Just trundle 'round as it were. Not all have beards and sandals either. I know of one such, a friend of a friend.

I followed his progress when I was a volunteer at Alston in 2017, hoping he'd call in and stay a bit so I could say hello and chat a bit . He didn't. His progress was not fast but it was constant. Day or night, he just kept going, steadily eating up the miles. It was amazing to follow, I was massively impressed. Oh, and he lives in north Wales and rode to and from the start, probably with the same metronomic certainty. Finished LEL and rode home. How cool is that?

I'm speaking from a position of complete ignorance here, cos this sort of thing is way outside my cycling universe, but ... The fact that there is a problem around access to power doesn't necessarily mean everyone is charging loads of pointless gadgets. It could just mean that most people have phones and want to keep them switched on and topped up. That's just normal these days. And many people have non-dynamo lights that have been purchased recently - the majority of lights on the market are rechargeable only.

Maybe I'll get myself a little petrol generator and a multi socket extension lead and set up in a handy layby charging extortionate prices
