Maybe consider Premier Inn Ruislip, central line into London from West Ruislip station in about 37 mins. It's usually very cheap, and it's minutes from the A40 / M40 and about 8 mins off the M25.

Watford. Metropolitan line in

I stayed at the Mercure, Watford, for my last visit to that there London.

Handy for the OP as it's close to the M1.

Nowt flash, but clean and comfortable.

The lack of air con shouldn't matter in October.

A couple of test bookings suggest £80-£100+ for a double room.

This type of hotel tends to be aimed at business travel, so stopping on a Friday or Saturday night is often cheaper than mid week.

It's a bit more complicated than that...

Good call. £4 each way on the tube. The magic combination for the cheapest, most convenient stay will be:

Inside the TfL zone system so that you can use Oyster or Contactless debit card.

Near the M1, before it becomes an urban motorway.

Near enough to the station to walk.

Free parking.

Don't really want to pay Central London prices, but would like somewhere quite nice for a night away together. We are coming from Birmingham, so West/NW would be better, and on a tube line from Leicester Square / Embankment / Charing Cross would be good.
Book rail travel to London asap for the best price.
It's not for everyone, but I like to leave hotel booking until a day or two before travel and using Lastminute. com or Latebooking.com or Secret hotels, Trivago Lastminute deals, etc etc.,to find good rates in normally more expensive hotels.
Decide in advance if you want breakfast included in room price, it can often be bought at a nearby cafe at less expense.
Be prepared to spend some time online searching for a reasonably priced stay, .
If you really can't be bothered searching, try the Imperial chain, Imperialhotels.co.uk they have six hotels offering a range of quality and prices, better to book asap.
See the London underground website https://visitorshop.tfl.gov.uk/ and select the best buy for you regarding travel tickets within London.
As others have said, Premier Inn, Travel Lodge are a bit clinical but not so expensive if booked in advance.

Its a bit further out but if its the weekend Canary Wharf is cheaper , during the week business vistors put the prices up , but at the weekend there are fewer.
and you can get a river taxi to the embankment which is then a 10 min walk to theatre land
Have a look at the Britannia international

Premier Inn is the place to look. They have a number of hotels in Zone 1 and 2 - particularly in the City and Docklands - which can be remarkably good deals at weekends.

This.

there is a travelodge in the city close to petticoat lane so you "could" do a touristy thing on the sunday.

avoid Hotel formule 1 or Etap in Barking

An alternative to staying out west would be to come south on the M11, carry on south to the tunnel. A fair number of hotels have been built in Greenwich over the last 4 or 5 years. Pretty quick journey up to town, Docklands Light Railway, old-fashioned railway, though no tube or Boris Bikes (under the foot tunnel for the nearest bike stands), a fair park with a good old history, museums, riverside walks, etc. Some hotels here: https://www.google.co.uk/maps/search/greenwich+hotels+london/@51.4782045,-0.0204337,14.75z

As I'm a suburban resident...Tudor Lodge hotel, Eastcote is just down the road from me. Big enough car park. The Black Horse, just around the corner has decent live music on a Friday. Metropolitan Line and Piccadilly Line. Centre of London in 40 minutes or less. Commuting is very simple. Alternatively, there is a bus that stops outside the hotel (both directions) to Northolt tube; then Central Line to Westfield, Marble Arch etc - depends on one's preference for calm or bustle I guess.
Decent restaurant five minutes walk away from the Hotel too...https://en-gb.facebook.com/lahorerestauranteastcote/ (bring your own grog) In fact, there are 35 different places to eat and drink...and a nice big Aldi - right below me!

Bed and full English etc. @StuAff - you were lucky with that price!

Just seen the post about Saturday night - I just picked at random for this pic...Sat 22nd October is same price for example.

And the boat journey up from Greenwich to Embankment (the Adelphi is a short walk from Embankment Pier) is worth it if it's a nice evening...
Oh, very much so. I'm in London in September to visit the Astrophotographer of the Year 2016 at Greenwich Observatory, then back into the city via the clipper boat which is fun.
On the subject of where to stay in London, I can vouch for this place:

Although you need to book about a month in advance to the cheapest prices. I've stayed there twice when working in the capital. If you don't mind the blandness, you could try the Southwark Travelodge. I mention this only because the Lord Nelson pub is across the street. It's the only pub I've ever been in that reminds me of a few Amsterdam coffeeshops...

The Bridge Hotel in Greenford's quite decent. Very close to the A40*, and reasonably close to the Central Line, and usually reasonably priced at the weekend.

* It's off a roundabout, but traffic noise didn't bother me.

late rooms secret hotels was my trick a few years back.

simply they'll tell you the approx location of the hotel from some London landmarks which allows you to work out roughly where it is and if it suits without giving away which hotel it is, and the price is usually quite low.

The reason is, many large hotels would rather have the rooms with someone in paying something rather than the room empty and the staff kicking their heels.

Ended up in both the ex GWR Grand Hotel (now Hilton) at Paddington and another hotel the other side of Hyde Park but can't remember the name, both costing similar or less than a travelodge.
