Locks... Which one....

So I'm still waiting for my money to be paid to the cycle scheme, and in the meantime I am looking for locks.

Yes, I know. I should have probably got one in the scheme, but I thought I still had one from my old bike. I didn't.

So I thought this would be fairly easy to do. It isn't.

I've done some google searches had a look on various reputable websites, as I thought they would give me a bit of an insight. They haven't.

Everything seems to contradict each other... ****BUY THIS LOCK...IT'S AWESOME******, followed by ****** DON'T BUY THIS LOCK, IT CAN BE BUSTED OPEN WITH A BIC PEN/PAIR OF BOLT CUTTERS/BABY HOLDING A FEATHER*****

So what do you guys recommend?

To give you the heads up.... I will only really be locking it up when I am at the gym, where it will be chained to some railings monitored by a CCTV camera and several reception staff. All of my other journeys are likely to be round trips starting either at home, or at my car out in the country somewhere. Work is very secure and if anyone wants to try and steal it from there, there would be very silly indeed.

I'm not to fussed on budget, I'd rather spend a bit more and get something which comes with some kind of theft cover (upto £1000 will suffice), than be forever hounded by the " I told you so brigade". I also know that I am going to need more than one lock. But like I say, cost isn't really an issue on this one.

So in light of the Internet not really assisting my search, I am turning to my trusted friends within the forum (yes, before someone points it out, this is on the internet, I know), for some pointers/recommendations!

I look forward to your recommendations and sarcasm!

Peace Out

TBH if somebody wants to nick your bike they will. a couple of decent locks/chains and what you have described parking wise should suffice. If you want something tested then look for 'Thatcham approved'

Yeah, I'd kinda figured as much. I just want to know that if they do, then they've had to work bloody hard for it, and that they will be on CCTV for as long as possible. I'm nice like that :-)

I was looking into this too, the Kryptonite 'D' locks have made the best impression so far.

Yeah, I'm probably going to be going down that route. The New York fahgettaboudit chains look pretty meaty too... Maybe one of each. I can take the seat into the gym with me so don't need to worry about securing that.

These come with a level of loss protection too. Don't know what the terms of it are, I presume that as long as you haven't chained it up like a thicko then you're good!

I have the kryptonite cable with a mini d lock. Sold secure silver and I reckon it would take some beating. Loss protection more than my bike was worth. Although I upped my house insurance to cover the bike so would never need to use it (the loss protection only kicks in in excess of what you get from your insurance). Have another lock as well as thieves generally only carry kit to break one type.

Iirc kryptonite only pay out if all parts of the lock are still there and you can prove it was broken, so by no means foolproof. Get proper insurance, checking the t&c and any excess

Fwiw I have an abus granit x 54 and another kryptonite lock to use if I need double protection, the abus is enough when leaving the bike on the high street or outside a supermarket

Mine are insured on my home contents insurance, with away from home protection. Covered for up to £500 unnamed. Value over £500, with attached accessories etc, need to be named

Mr haematocrit's bikes are rather more valuable than mine

What lock would you recommend to use for very short stays like just nipping into tescp or public toilets when out and about on a bike?

I can take bike inside my office and I'd never cycle to city centre and leave it all day

I take my bike into the public toilet, not always possible, but often is.

As regards the supermarket, I go for full security which in my case is £70 of Kryptonite D lock.

Even then, I nip round as fast as possible and don't visit the coffee shop, even though I might like to.
