Hi all,

My shiny, lovely new bike will hopefully we with me on Wednesday or Thursday and I want to invest in a decent D-lock, with a cable for the QR wheels. I'd like it to be Sold Secure silver minimum, for insurance. Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations, please? £40 is ideally the most I'd like to spend.

Thanks in advance

£40 will buy an average lock - I have these as my back up option which meet your criteria http://www.tredz.co.uk/.Kryptonite-Evolution-Mini-7-Lock-With-4-Foot-Kryptoflex-Cable_53382.htm

If leaving anywhere for any time, I also use the abus granit x beast but those are £70+

What are you going to lock it to - small D locks are harder to jack open but can be a pain to secure around some stands etc

I used the reviews on bike radar when looking for a lock. I got an abus granit x plus. I got mine reduced in your price range.

Do not scrimp on a lock. You need An ABUS Granite or a New York FAGH (called a "forgetaboutit" or some such).

The Granite is bigger and is a little more flexible, The FAGH is a small d lock and needs careful placing, but it's about as bomb proof as you can ever get. (I use a FAGH)

Locks cost, but you will have your bike there at the end of a day. Also you need to learn to lock it properly.

Use a good d lock and something else for the front wheel.

Anything that involves a cable, even shielded is a waste of time. Cable locks are pants !

Kryptonite New York 3000 / STD (they're the same lock, they changed the name not too long ago), also Sold Secure Gold. Usually about £60, but if you shop around you can probably find it a bit cheaper. I second what's said above - don't scrimp on the lock, you're just inviting disaster.

I also have the mini kryptonite with cable. But as noted it can be tricky to get around some stands if you use it on it's own. But it is damn heavy and would expect it to take some hammer before giving up.

I think they actually come in better ! Some Gold rated are not upto these two !

They are also capable of taking out a small car if thrown at one !

They are still Gold, just better than others, don't think there are grades within

The standard just reflects how long to breach IIRC

Thanks to you all. I've decided to go for the Abus Granit 54 X-Plus.
Please could you tell me how I can secure the front wheel if cables are no good? I don't fancy the extra weight of carrying round two D-locks.
Also, how do I "lock it properly"? Does that mean put the lock through the frame and rear wheel and around an immovable object, and secure the front wheel, or is it more complicated than that? Thanks in advance.

Use a cable for the front, or better still an ABUS BORDO - got one myself - no-one knows how to deal with them ! ^_^

Cables are no good as a primary method of locking. But for just holding the front wheel, they're fine. I use either a Kryptoflex cable or a (relatively cheap) Abus cable lock to secure mine.

Locking properly is exactly as you describe.

Why do you use the D on the back and the cable on the front and frame/forks. Surely better to secure the easier to remove front wheel and not the harder to remove wheel with all the gearing nonsense
