Until the Police give a sh*t, until the courts take it seriously then NOTHING will happen.

Steal a £2k Rolex and the police will be all over it, steal a £4k bike and the only worry is how to spend the proceeds.

We as cyclists need to be screaming about this we need to make it as much of an issue as road safety.

since the thread title refers to London I presume that you know nothing of the 30 strong bicycle crime unit in London.

According to the Met the Kryptonite New York lock is about the best - it takes a professional thief 22 seconds to get through. Or. as others have suggested, take it with you when you can.

If the 2k Rolex is attached to someone's wrist then rightly so...if the bike is locked up with a cable at a railway station and no one is attacked then it's understandable that the police will look at the CCTV if it is there and do what they can. I am sure if someone is attacked and the bike stolen in a similar circumstance to the watch, then I expect the police will act appropriately

This is what insurance is for ultimately and the owner's responsibility to secure their property as best they can

Not sure what information you base your Rolex view on, personal experience?

ME? Rolex! In my dreams ;)
A bit of bling has value a bike even if its worth twice the cost of the Bling is valueless in the eyes of the police.

From what I've seen police give cycle theft a minimal priority. You say that they will review CCTV..... in my experience they won't. The attitude is akin to mobile phones, you should have insurance.

Is it any wonder we have such horrendous levels bike theft?

I've only been here less than a week and I don't want to come across as a trouble maker or controversial but having had a bike stolen and knowing others too the police response was apathetic at best. The London Cyclist blog says "don't expect the police to help" and "you'll have an uphill struggle to get the police to help"

I was genuinely interested in finding out more about the Met Cycle Crime unit so googled it and from the results they seem to do high profile bike marking and..... not much else.

22 seconds agreed,I think the point here would be the tools needed to do it would look very out of place in a city centre. What's the point in all this CCTV if its not going to be used.

People steal bike because they get away with it that needs to change.

if you don't know..........ask

they recover hundreds of bikes - I can get the number for you if you ask nicely. They set up stings. They co-operate with HMRC who send bike thieves tax bills. And bike theft in London is dropping

Thanks Dellzeqq, had my previous fairly expensive bike stolen. Have spent a fair while saving up for this one. I have no choice but to leave it locked up at times in public places. The thought of people being able to pretty much steal bikes at will is pretty sickening especially as my new one is only a week old.

Saw a person on a programme being arrested for trying to steal a bait bike. It said he was a prolific bike thief and well known to Police. That needs to stop.
