what about wild camping is that something you'd consider as it'd keep your costs down and give you extra spend money for the likes of beer?

I wild camped twice between Passau and Budapest. There are long stretches of the route that have few opportunities for stealth camping. The campsites are not particularly expensive especially in Slovakia and Hungary.

Beer is so cheap that you do not need to worry about its cost. I came back with a sizeable amount of my spending money unspent. I did not hold back with the alcohol expenditure

Hi Rich, I'm gonna keep an eye on this thread because I'd love to be able to join you and do something like this. I'm also thinking of signing up to the London to Paris a couple of months later so it could be an interesting summer next year  Shame on you for not visiting the eureka by the way

Go for it Fray your more than welcome to join me mate!....I'm looking to do a few trips in 2013, looking at Sweden into Denmark for a week possibly maybe Iceland, but this is going to be my main summer trip and having watched The Hostel there is not a chance of me stealth camping anywhere! and I will definitely definitely get to Eureka this month even if i go in a delta!

Me too Rich...I'm very interested, it sounds great. I'm also planning on doing the London/Paris so I'll seriously have to consider if I am fit enough for both.

You don't have to be that fit to do the ride.

I took a friend along with me on the Passau to Budapest stretch and he'd never done more than thirty miles in a day without camping gear and not more than twenty miles a day on two successive days with camping gear. He didn't have a bike until I sold him one three months before we set off.

He coped with a seventy mile first day with no problems and we averaged fifty miles a day. The route is flat - it follows a river downstream it isn't really challenging. Trust me. As a twenty one stone rider I know what challenging is

Hmm maybe both are possible then. I currently average 30 miles and my longest ride is 56 mile in 4 hours. So I'll give some serious consideration. Cheers for the tip.

When touring you need to chill! Aim for 10mph average and hit as many cafes and bars as you can.

I've just cycled home from Budapest following the Danube path to Passau and then working my way through the German national parks to Rotterdam. I love the physical side of bike touring so was doing around 110-120 miles a day (given the terrain, that was easily achievable). The trip took 12 days and I was able to wild camp on 11 of the nights - if you know what you are looking for there are plenty of places to wild camp. The stretch along the Danube is lovely but can become a bit boring as it is so flat - would make the perfect first tour though. Including Flights and Ferry the travelling costs were a pretty reasonable £156
