I can not get the shoes to clip into the pedals........
On the pedals the back bit with the Allen key bit to adjust them that is on a Spring, is that meant to move backward because it is solid I cannot move it back.
Am I right in saying that the backbeat of the pedal must move backwards on the spring so the shoes can clip in.

Yes stick the toe lip in and push the back down. The spring should allow enough movement for the rear of the lip to click in. To release the shoe you should turn the heel outwards (or inwards but the bike frame will be in the way).
They are adjustable, so they may not be stuck, you may be able to turn the allen key, I guess anti clock wise to release the tension on the spring. Once you have got it all working you should set it so you are firmly locked in but it is easy enough to release the shoe.

Back off the allen key on the pedal above the spring.
You might find it easier if the cleats are straighter on the shoes. You are going to be very much "heel in" the way you have them set-up, although you may have your reasons for that?

You won't be able to move the clip on the pedal with your hand - even at the lightest setting.

First of all try to fully release the pressure on the spring by turning the allen key anti clockwise, I don't have these pedals but this may be quite a few turns. If all works ok the shoe will go in easier. Then reset the spring to your preference.
Remember toe in first and then the heel.

Very good, just try out how firm you want to be clipping out by adjusting the spring (ie turning the allen key).
Setting the clips on the shoes is the same, you need to try it out, but I would start with putting the clip in the middle positions and take it from there.
Enjoy

Spend a bit of time over this. Everybodies physiology is different, and you might find that having the cleats completely straight might not actually suit you.

I have one of mine straight, and the other side pointing slightly outwards (so that my heel is in to the bike). When I first went on to SPDs I initially tried setting them up straight and kept getting random pains in my right knee.

You may have to get off and re-adjust them a couple of times before you find a position that's properly comfortable.

this is quite helpful re spd cleat setting

You won't be able to pull the spring back with your hand, it's too stiff, even in the weakest setting. Back off the adjustment i.e. in the minus - direction, so the spring is at it's weakest. When clipping in your shoe point the shoe slightly toe down. This should make it easier for the cleat in the shoe to engage.

I may just add.... you aren't trying to clip the shoes in by hand are you? You really need them on your feet to get the right leverage.
