There are much safer and cleaner battery chemistries available, eg sodium-ion.

If they develop sufficiently to be economically viable, and matching or approaching the energy density and cost, then they'll take over.
More importantly, at that point, lithium-ion can and must be banned

I was at University in 1980 and was involved (on the edges) in a research project about sodium ion batteries
so I have checked up on them from time to time (but not for a while to be honest)
Their progress has been incredibly slow - to the point where I gave up looking at them

I can;t see them taking over in a time scale where the current 12 year old will see them as normal when they are "grown up"

but I agree - once there are good replacements then Li batteries - as they are now - need to be phased out quickly!
