I use flat pedals and bought some Karrimor waterproof shoes, which grip well but are only waterproof in one direction – i.e. the water can get in, but it can’t get out again. Even on a radiator it takes a good few hours until they’re roasty-toastie again.

I’ve bought some waterproof socks, so any recommendations as to some basic shoes that reduce the windchill on feet, and are thin enough that they dry fairly quickly?

I’m not interested in clipless pedals, but if there are cycling shoes with recessed cleats that wouldn’t get in the way I’d consider them – I have to walk 10 mins at the end of my commute. Would Muddy Fox MBS100 be any good for this?

Overshoes?

I just wear a pair of Cat trainers, theyve got relatively thin hard rubber soles which the screws on my flat pedals really bite into and completely normal when you're off the bike. I'd probably get overshoes if i needed more wind/water protection

Waterproof socks sound weird!

I've come to terms with the fact that nothing is going to keep the water out, even overshoes, so just concentrating on keeping my feet warm and letting the shoes dry out during the day. It's normally one big splash that does the damage, they cope with showers fairly well.

Maybe sandals......... ;-)

Ditto this. I found a pair of Puma leather trainers with quite thin rubber soles on ebay. Very grippy on my pedals and, because they are not as bulky as normal trainers, I can get overshoes on top. Fiver plus postage for the shoes and eight pounds for overshoes from a seller on here. Sorted and very happy. ^_^

Take yourself to the same place as you got the Karrimor shoes and get a pair of Lonsdale trainers. I've got a black pair with a velcro closure and quite a thin sole which provides a lot of feel. They really work well for me, though you might not find the same. Probably a smidgin under £20.
