Hope Vision 1.

Rather than start up a new thread (and while we're on the subject), I'm after a good front light for commuting (25mph tops really) on unlit country lanes. My current Halfrauds £30 single LED light just can't cut it in that situation . . .

My choices are narrowed down to:

Hope Vision 1
Exposure Joystick
Dinotte . . . ? (heard great things, but can't find any stockists!)

I am prepared to spend up to about £150 for a light, which may or may not go above what the OP is enquiring about.

Cheers.

Ayups are just about in your budget. They are quite a bit brighter than the Hope Vision 1 but not worth twice the money imho.

At the top of your budget range one of the places that formerly sold dinotte you can get a 900 lumen beasty called a Luu.

Dinotte aren't imported any more, so you've got to order from the US.

For an AA-powered light, I'd get a B+M Ixon IQ (dotbike or Germany) rather than the Hope.

If you want most light for least money, there's the £50 Magicshine P7 from Hong Kong. Approx 600 lumens (actual) for 3 hours on high. Delivery is sluggish - about 3 weeks seems to be average.

If you want to buy in the UK, also look at the Airbike (£100) from On-One

edit: On-One sell the Luu (£175)

Question i have is how fast can you go with a 200 lumen light and then to double the speed do you have to have 4 times the light output 800 lumens?
how fast are you comfortable with 600 lumens ?
way home tonight the main battery on my lights went flat, my backup light is good for 5 mph, wasn't fun.
i had to listen to some leonard cohen to cheer myself up

I have used Dinotte 200L for the past few years on low setting with no problems at any speed (including 50mph downhill on Glen Shee).

I now have a Lupine Tesla (the Dinotte started to play silly buggers) and have only been out once with it. But I had it on either lowest or next setting for all the route apart form a few times when I switched to max to see how bright it was. The lower settings coped well.

I also have a Hope 1, and will use that as a head torch and as a back up should I get back to longer distances. I would be happy using the Hope 1 on low and reckon I could go as fast as I could and see.

For me it's not how much a light can put out but rather how long it lasts at a setting which allows good illumination to travel at a speed I can maintain over a distance yet also handles the fast stuff as well. Switching to high on blind dips and corners is an advantage but not essential.

Looks like there is only high/low mode. And neither are long. Great for rides under 5 hours, but not for long distance riding. Look good for the price tho. Would be better if there was 'staged' settings imo.

fenix torch (or 2) about £45 ea
takes AA batteries - search previous threads - IMHO nothing beats them under £100

(or if you still find them 3w tesco cree torches - i have a couple and for £9 really good)

Some folk obviously have to much money if they think £70 i cheap.....

I don't think £70 is cheap but rather like an excellent post Noodley made I value the thing being good enough to see in the pitch dark, last for many hours (I sometimes do long night time rides) and not come flying off on descents. In anycase I got one of mine for £30 as a cast off for someone who bought one of the other systems talked about .
