Hi I have just this dilemma at the moment have you seen the ay up lights ? there sposed to be the dogs wotsits, im looking into it cant make me mind up tho.....

I have had a set for a year. Used on road and dark lanes. They have been great. Not cheap though but worth it. After sales support is great too. My old batter packed up right on the end of warranty (for the batteries etc, the light is guaranteed for 10 years  so I contacted ayup uk and they sent a replacement straight away (one of the new types with an on/off switch).

Those Ayups look proper bright

How long does the battery last and how long does it take to charge ?

They do 2 batteries. 3hrs & 6hrs. I have the 6hr, takes about 3-4hrs or so to fully charge.

The Ayups are good value because they are simple. They are just a light and a battery (and on recent models a switch).
Where you lose is on flexibility. If you want it to last longer, you need a bigger battery (or another one). More expensive lights offer the option of turning down the brightness for longer life, which is quite handy when you consider that on a straight and even track or road, you often don't need all that much light. You get to either ride for longer or carry a smaller battery for the same functional benefit.

In terms of light output, the actual LEDs are pretty much standard for recent lights, so you can compare lights just by counting LEDs and looking at full power run times. Eg an Ayup (with 2x1 LED heads) will give much the same light as a USE Exposure Race Maxx, or twice as much as a Dinotte 200 or Ixon IQ. You just have to watch for models that are still using last year's LEDs.
There will be variation in beam pattern (narrow, flood, shaped), but you really have to see the light in action to judge that.

I've obtained 2 of the infamous Tesco 3W torches - they don't have the AA ones, so I have 2 of the C ones instead.

Looking at ways to attach, it seems the posts I've read here aer mostly concerned with the smaller AA one - what have people had success with on the C one?

Looking at the rubber thing for maglites - http://www.brighterlight.co.uk/products/nite-ize/literide.htm - does anyone know if this would be ok for my torches?

Lots of rear light wisdom on here, just have a play with the Search facility. The Mars 4.0 and the Smart 1/2 watt are probably the main two that people swear by.

Got a Mars 4.0 as a tertiary back light. It's excellent, it doesn't illuminate a large area but is very, very bright.
