As I came up to some traffic lights tonight I actually switched my light off because I thought the poor driver in front of me would not be to impressed with this light flashing frantically behind him filling his mirrors up with a blinding light. He actually put his hand out of the window and gave me a wave to say thank you. As you rightly say they can be a little intense to the car user.

You can indeed, but many of us have the Hope 1 as it's so damn well made. I've had mine 7 years. It's getting long in the tooth, but the AA batteries are a bonus point if you've got chargers, and you can always carry spares. Horses for courses. Always pick what best suits you.
Plus the after sales service I've heard is brilliant though I've never had to use it myself!

I've just been having a root around the garden shed and found a rear led light languishing around the various junk I have in there. The only problem is there's no room on the seat post to mount it because my saddle bags in the way. The saddle bag is only a cheapie from wilkos so I've decided to cut a small slit in the top of it so that I can clip my light to it. In in fairness its rock solid and confident it will stay put. Because it sticks out away from the seat post it should be quite visible to.

One word of advice - well, two actually! Get a cable tie round that light - the last thing you want is for it to ping away into oblivion in the middle of nowhere! The second is to run a second rear light - try mounting it on the seat stays. The Smart rear lights come with a mount that will fit on a seat stay. The three LED smart rear light will fit there happily - just make sure that it doesn't foul the spokes.

I would recommend white for the front and red for back , seriously I use the pound shop rears. Have one on tool bag and one on helmet, excellent for the price, but they don't like the rain too much, so make sure the seal is Good. Did get one with lasers that put out a "cycle lane" beam, but haven't got round to trying it yet, so a fairly useless last comment really

Is led lighting technically legal for road use. I seem to recall vaguely they were not permitted to be used solely as the main light source many moons ago and were only to be used with an incandescent light . The police obviously don't bat an eye lid at them nowadays..Was there also a law on the requirements for bikes to be fitted with mud guards. Virtually all 80s racers had those useless aluminium guards that just covered the brakes.

My first 'racer', a 1970's pearlescent orange Falcon came with those on. I was only young but I hated them but my Mum told my Dad they were a legal requirement so I had to keep them on. I just went round the corner to my pals house & took them off there. A rebel without a clue. They weren't a legal requirement though, just fashion and not the biggest faux pas I could have been accused of in the 70's.

A wide angle lens for the Cree T6 lights can be had here for £3, well worth it a much wider spread of light and if you get a swivel mount it can also be directed away from the on coming traffic, the link is an example the one I have is a fixed bracket on the bike which the light slides and locks onto,.

No law about mudguards.

Most LED's don't comply with the highway code and aren't approved. There are a few German lights that have a beam cut off as the LED is mounted in the top of the reflector, and have a specially designed lense/reflector.

The ixon IQ does exactly this, so once properly mounted there's no need to mess about turning the light off or shifting it to avoid dazzle.

There's been q couple of posts here regarding rear lights from Poundland. I went to have a quick look around there this afternoon and came across a rear led light that looks quite smart but what really caught my eye was the fact it's got a laser feature. It projects two red lines of laser light down onto the road surface about 8 feet long from the back of the bike. The lines parallel about 4 feet apart. For the cost of a pound I couldn't say no. Boys and there toys lol
Just added a quick picture. The photo doesn't really do it any justice ,as it looks a hell of a lot brighter to the eye.

I've just been messing around trying to get the best image but my phone doesn't seem to get a very good image sorry I'm quite impressed with it though. I don't know how long at will last before it breaks etc but for a pound its worth a try. I think it would be a great addition to a child's bike. The novelty alone would make them use it and intimately be safer in the dark evening's.

I've got one of those. The LED light is good on its own, but one of the lasers has already stopped working.
Had a look for another today but they didn't have any in stock.
