:thumbsdown: They're at best a temporary get you home fix. And they usually render the tyre unrepairable on cars. Your daughters car needs a new tyre. Like, immediately. It's utterly unsafe and I don't want to share the road with it.

You can get water based sealers .Tyres sealed with this type of sealant can be vulcanised or so my garage informs me,

Paired with the right tyres (eg Marathon Plus @steveindenmark ) carrying one of these will ensure you never again get a puncture; so you'll never know if it works. Of course you could always give a current 'good' tyre a stab and then try it. Do let us know how such an experiment went. Then repeat to see if the sealant comes 'spewing out and makes a mess all over', as some have said above.

Here are my experiences of using a sealant and why I ended up in the situation in the first place.
1. Cold dark wet winter commute home - could not be arsed to change the inner, resorted to a can of crivit. Tyre inflated to about 70 % and stayed up all the way home. Was still ridable the next day but I swapped the inner tube out anyway.

2. Summer ride and I get a puncture. I have two inner tubes so I swap one out. I reach for my pump and it's fooked. I can't get the damn thing open. I use a crivit thing to inflate the tyre. It made a total mess but it got me home. Foamy gunge all over my hands and all over the wheel.

3. Double blow out with only one inner tube. I swap one out and use a crivit for the front. Sealant comes out of the gaps in the tubing around the can, total PITA but I manage to get home OK.

So yeah, its temporary, messy, and not a long term fix. But on three occasions it's saved my bacon.

OTTOMH it's a little extra weight in the tyres, it seals the valve eventually, it sets in the tyre eventually and if your tube gets cut (rather than a small puncture), it's very messy and a swine to clean off what it sprays.

Wheel balance. A lump of sealant in the tyre often doesn't spread evenly and causes an imbalance. As you know, an imbalanced wheel causes steering or arse shake, damages the tyre eventually and is bad for the suspension.
Some sealants jamb the valve, which you only discover when you want to top up the air some time down the line.

Ive never had any of this or heard of anyone it has happened to first hand . On the test i did the sealant was just like a wet surface all over the tube when i cut it open . Maybe if you leave the sealant in a tube with the vavle at the bottom for a few years what you are saying could maybe possibly happen but its not a very good reason to not use sealant .

YYSW @Cuchilo what happened to my sealant-repaired tubes over a few weeks cycling was because I left it for a year(!)
I might have guessed all of these things had actually happened to you rather than you just reading about it on the internet  I seem to have been the lucky one as i have sealant in all of my racing and training wheels and have never had a problem .

What, and you use lidl, aldi or zefal repair sealant in them? I'd expect there are different formulations, like there are for car tyres.

Here are three blobs of rubber sealant from three different brands of sealant I've used over the years.

They are heavy enough to create a noticeable vibration at speed.

I was --> <-- that close to using a canister today because it was so hot and I didn't really want to hang about for 10 minutes patching... but I'd not put it back in my bag since I got everything out on Saturday night to let it dry out. Oh well.

What brands ? The tube i opened just looked like a milky white fluid , rather like a wet rain coat . That was after i punctured the tube about 20 times and left if for a few months .

On a car or motorcycle I would ony trust a permanent "mushroom plug" repair properly bonded to the inside of the tyre for full speed rating.

Do the emergency cans not come with a speed warning?.

I've had the joy of repairing motorcycle tyres, slime type sealants can be cleaned off adequately and repaired but some of the aerosol emergency repairs required new tyres fitting.

I've never really understood the wheel balancing argument against sealant , my bike wheels are unbalanced anyway so with a bit of luck a puncture in the right place should make things better ^_^

Let me try asking again, more directly: what brand are you using?

It's a bit rich to ask @Yellow Saddle for that information while failing to provide it yourself. Are you actually using this stuff, or just posting what you read on the internet?
