Wonder if anyone has thoughts on possible causes of recurring leg injuries?
Did LEJOG in the Summer. Hard but no real problems in the legs or lungs, which surprised me to be honest. Only mention that to be clear that finished it feeling fine with no injuries, strains or whatever. However, then did very little of anything for about 6 weeks and then started running in prep for a half marathon. And my legs appear to be destroyed! Basically can't do even half a mile before pains in the muscles round my ankles (not the joints themselves) and muscles leading from ankles and into my calves make it impossible to carry on. Pretty bad shin splints as well but I've always had them. I've rested for a week or so until no twinges but as soon as I go out again the same thing happens. Also worth saying it was first in the right, then both, then worse in left...so it basically swaps around and isn't an injury to one side. (I bought new trainers before I started and stress that this is not just a bit of discomfort caused by lack of fitness or crap footwear. I limp like a retired pit pony!) This has been the pattern. But now random muscles seem to be pulling with no real reason. I.e. not as a result any real effort or awkward movement. E.g. squatting down just now the muscles on the upper inside of both legs just went, meaning I'm having to walk up the stairs sideways!!!! Don't know what to think - it's like my leg muscles are just giving up...
Any thoughts are witty p1ss taking to snap me out of pathetic self-pity appreciated.
Cheers

I get periodic muscle pain (mainly thighs) and have done since I was 29 (I'm 42 and a quarter now!). So far I have had 3 biopsies, hundreds of tests and appointments with specialists and they still can't diagnose the problem. I'm going back for another biopsy next month. I'm sure what you have is nothing like this so don't worry, but what's clear is that muscle problems can be dead complicated so I couldn't begin to diagnose what you have. In my case they suspect a glycogen storage problem which causes sometimes extreme pain, often lasting up to a week meaning I can't walk let alone cycle.
Last year- this is going to sound odd- I started drinking cherry juice, which is a powerful muscle detox drink (cordial). I was also given a prescription of co-enzyme Q10 (100mg) which I take twice a day. Since then, I have been affected by the pain far less- in fact I haven't had a severe attack for over a year. (Oh and I also buy creatine from a health shop).
I'm not saying it would definately help as your condition is likely to be caused by something else than mine, but it might be worth a go - especially the cherry juice. The stuff I take you can get in supermarkets (apart from Tesco) and is this: Morello Cherry Cordail
It could be a genetic problem so find out if anyone in your immediate family has ever suffered similar.
Good luck- It's incredibly depressing when you don't know what's causing it, certainly get your GP to refer you to a specialist- your best bet is UCH London where they have the best muscle boffins in the UK.See Muscle Boffins down in Lonon

going through similar problems. Finished jogle feeling very strong. Now training for cardiff half marathon, legs are very strong but getting pains in calves and shins.

I tnink cycling, while good at strengthing legs, does not involve impact and wnen the legs are subjected to
intense impact they simply are not used to it.

Tne solution, i think, is to build up slowly and allow time for recovery.

Have you tried having a decent sports massage on your legs? I always stretch my legs after exercise but periodically get a sports massage on my legs, they feel much better afterwards. I don't have the same problems that you do but a proper hard massage has got to be worth a go?

How did the 1/2 marathon go? Did I spot you running past me carrying a ukulele?
