I replaced my sqaure taper BB and ever since that the bolts keep working loose no matter how tight and i get a creak at the start of every pedal stroke on the left hand side, i have tried single side pedaling and its definitely just coming from the left side and it gets worse untill i tighten up the bolt .

When i do tighten the bolt it makes the same sort of creak .

I have read on another thread that it could be done to a bit of play between slightly worn crank and new bottom bracket ?

The cranks i use are 170 mm square taper , so i have been looking at these, would it be best to go for both side ?

( i use a standard 50/34 compact 5 point chainring. 110 bcd i think ...) on a carrera virtuoso

And would it be best to get some new bolts?

Are you sure you have the right square taper? There are two types, ISO and JiS.

Sheldon has an article on the 2 sizes of square taper and points out that you can interchange them but be aware of the possible problems, chainline being one. And what can happen with wear.

I am sure you have, but just checking have you greased the bb and the crank thoroughly when assembling?

Yes ;)BB was sweet, i tried greasing it and it made no difference and according to serch fu it is generally recommended not to grease square taper as it can lead to over torquing ....

taken from many sources and heres an official document.

The only point it creaks is at around the one o'clock mark as the power is being transferred through the pedal, tried one leg pedaling to test it and its only the left side that does it .When it gets tightened the noise reduces.
It can be loud enough for someone standing at the side of you to hear as my neighbour said he could he it creaking .

Soft pedaling you can hardly hear it but as soon as you need to give it any power it gets worse.
