Leaving bike at the train station

Hi,

I'm cycling part of the way to work and leaving the bike at a train station. It's 10 miles each way and I currently have an entry level hybrid which is ok for the job but I really fancied getting something lighter and speedier and naturally more expensive. The only problem is the bike parking facilities at the station are awful. There is no CCTV, the bike rack is out of the way in a dark and dingy corner. Perfect for the local scrotes.

So I'm undecided about investing in a new bike if it's gonna get nicked. Can anyone recommend a really good lock? I doubt there's anything that is theft proof but two really good locks might be enough of a deterrent.

Cheers,

vincent

Personally I'd stick with the bike and buy a second for any leisure rides/rides where you won't be leaving it unattended. I leave my bike at the station daily, and wouldn't dream of doing it with my better bikes.
Also you wouldn't really want to get a brand spanking bike all dirty etc over winter.

Nonetheless I always use two locks; kryptonite gold standard D lock. Though if you have insurance be sure to buy one that they specify is suitable!

Find out if there is a cycle campaign group and/or a rail passengers pressure group in your locality and join them in fighting for secure parking in the form of cycle lockers at the station.
It's not a short term solution, but if we don't ask it's unlikely we will ever get!

Don't leave your bike at the station - if it's half decent there's a good chance it may go - statistically bike thefts from railway stations are notorious. You have pretty much given the thief the indication that the bike is likely to be there for all of the day.

Avoid the heartache and find an alternative
