Sooooo

Finally, after owning a new bike for 4 weeks I finally went out on it today! Boy did I make up for it, considering I've only ridden about 4 or 5 miles in total so far at stints of maybe 30mins at a pop...I did a (relative) marathon of 2 hours and a distance of probably nearly 8 miles, which probably sounds crap but those 8 miles were me going round and round a carpark in an industrial estate that was obviously empty over the weekend.

For the last 45mins or so, I had 5 "cones" out in a straight line to try and practice tightening up my steering and make me learn to relax and flow instead of my bad habibt of jerking the handlebars.

I fell off once because I was riding along and a car pulled into the where I was cycling, I was doing a wide turn at the bottom of the carpark...the car was nowhere near me but I freaked out anyway and turned a bit too harshly, leaning over too much and the front wheel started to slip on the floor. I broke and put my right foot out to catch myself but the peddle spun round and hit me in the back of the leg which then crumpled and I toppled over!

I also stupidly at one point, when dismounting, put my foot down *on* the rear wheel instead of next to it! You can probably guess what happened.

It was a really nice change from the old Velour MTB. For a start its about 9kg lighter, 2" bigger frame and it doesnt have a front-sus. It was definately a good idea to go for the bigger bike as I wasnt so crunched up on it, nor was my knee nearly touching my elbow at the top of the pedal-stroke! The bike was much more responsive as well, which I guess was the lack of suspension, although the first few mins it felt weird as I wasnt used to feeling every slight bump in the road! OMG that saddle tho...

Was kinda getting getting there by the end, did a few runs where I managed to go between all the "cones" but I had to stop as my rear-end could just not take anymore of the saddle...been walking round the house like Johfn Wayne for the rest of the day!

Think I might purchase some riding gloves as well, my palms were quite sore by the end...although I assume a lot of that was me gripping too tight because I dont relax!

I love these threads. Congratulations on the huge progress you've made since your first post on here (as well as the weight loss!).

Glad to see you're back in the saddle again. ^_^ What bike did you end up getting?

I got a Carerra Subway Hybrid! The old bike was a Carerra Velour MTB.

Excellent!

Good idea re the gloves, I think they make a huge difference, for grip and for comfort.
Thanks! I'll have a looksie online tomorrow while I'm working...should be able to get a cheap pair I'd imagine! Maybe look at seats as well, its tempting to go on it one more time tho just to check its not me needing some "bedding in"!

If you're on a budget, you can get these in the Aldi bike bits sale as of Thursday. More expensive gloves may give you a little more comfort, or last a little longer - But these are great for the price. Shame they seem to only be available in yellow when I go to get some.

Edit: Cross posted with Andrew. Spent too much time retrieving the link!

For basic try-to-see-if-you-like-the-idea gloves, keep an eye on your local Lidl or Aldi; their stuff is cheap and reasonable for the price.

I gather Lidl have bike stuff in on Thursday 5 July ....

EDIT: took too long to type !

Fantastic, Swampy!
Wait before you spend money on a new saddle, you probably will get used to the one you got.
Keep us posted, great to read your story!

I think it's fair to say that the Lidl gloves are well recommended?

Right, it sounds like i'll be checking out Lidl tomorrow then!

Thanks for all the comments...I'm so glad to be back in the seat and going at it. I was kinda dreading it a bit before-hand but I was kinda sad to stop (tho my poor glutes just couldnt take anymore:stop: )!

They don't have the bike stuff in until the 5th, so don't go tomorrow for gloves!

Nice to see you're back on the bike! You may want to start looking for a park or something similar near you. I know you're using that car park we've seen on your YouTube clips, but if you find a traffic free park or trail, you may find it speeds up your learning process, as rather than going round and round doing the same turns, or weaving through pre planned cones, navigating the trails and paths will be more varied, and give you confidence a bit faster! Keep it up

Those gloves look alright, I've got a Lidl not far from where I work so I can pop in there on my lunch on Thursday!

Hmmm, I have thought about going somewhere a bit more adventurous! I guess I'm just worried that I wont react well if someone comes near me, or some joggers go past or a dog runs over or something! Even now for almost no reason I will have a wobbly moment now and then. Its the same reason that I wont try riding round the streets of a quiet estate or something. I just dont know what I'll end up doing if I hear a car...like above, a car not being near me took enough concentration away so that I fell off...

Still, I know its all a matter of confidence and that will just come with time!

Yay! Well done. And I'm super impressed with your weight loss -is that just with cycling or are you dieting too?
I'm a stone into my goal weight loss, half a stone to go.
As for cycling away from the car park, definitely try and find somewhere you feel safe to go. I started off on the cycle path last year and I was terrified of being in traffic but I'll ride anywhere now -and I'm still alive! Just go at a steady pace and keep your eyes on the road.
As for gloves - if you can't get the lidl ones they sell some reasonable ones for not a lot in sportsworld if you have one. ALthough I would spend more money for a really good pair. I got some pearl izumi ones -£20 - but they are amazing.
