I thought it might be silver solder, which melts at about 600 deg C but they said they'd run the bare frame through the 180 deg C oven just to check first.
The paint hadn't stuck to it quite the same as to steel, and there was some bubbling after 37 years. The paint was the worst shade of poo brown inaginable (Sable Brown in the catalogue).
