They should have an offence for being drunk in charge of a keyboard. Or better yet, stupid and in charge of a keyboard.

Just 'Stupid' would do it.

Unfortunately, there isn't a prison big enough for all of them.

It was the woman with the bowl of cereal and a spoon on her lap that got me.

Last time I did RideLondon I was stuck in a jam on the Marylebone Road on my way back home.

I took the opportunity to eat the rice pudding I'd brought with me, and was halfway through it before I realised that I was alongside a police car.

I quite often text whilst cycling along and am yet to get my collar felt. I'm sure you will be fine with a bottle of water.

In fact a police car did a u-turn in front of me this afternoon and I'd already shouted out "****ing idiot!" before my brain engaged and I realised it was plod. I took my punishment - a stern look - with good grace.

As I understand this, the law recognises that a bicycle can be fully and properly controlled with one hand (you are required to do so when signalling)

Hence there is no offence as stated by @jefmcg
You miss the point entirely. A car can be controlled by one hand as at times you have to change gear, turn on light, indicate etc.

The point is the offence is either dangerous cycling or cycling without due care and attention. Eating and drinking whilst cycling is a distraction and the moment look look down to put something in your mouth maybe the moment a hazard appears.
Being in control is not just hands on the handle bars, but eyes on the road too.

At least will be quicker to call an ambulance when you don't see that car pulling out!

He's probably got the point by now, given that the post you're commenting on is from nearly 8 years ago.

But people have to change gears on their car so eating one hand should be ok, no?

Ps: not going against what you say, just asking as an observer but not expecting anyone where to have an answer that would actually satisfy me.

As an HGV driver I could tell you of lots of things other drivers do whilst behind the wheel of a car or van, some of those things are much less savoury than one would like to imagine at this time of the morning!

Motorway plod have trucks without speed limiters that pull alongside and video what you are doing whilst driving. This includes, obviously, usung a mobile phone, eating, fiddling with anything that might be construed as illegal.

On cycling, I find it awkward eating as it affects my breathing so tend not to.

I don't eat whilst cycling, not least because the foodstuffs aren't ones I can eat single-handed. I do drink, but I can and do reach for the bottle and put it back without taking my eyes off the road.
