On a similar theme, I had a problem with my new Phone of I. It wouldn't ring, I tried everything in settings, could not work it out at all. I spent days trying to sort it. Finally I cycled 16 miles to the nearest shop, and in an exasperated manner I told them in the shop I wanted the phone changed under warranty because the phone doesn't ring. The bloke took the phone flicked the button on the side and then said. "sorted" . I felt such a twit.

Halfords staff can be very hit and miss. When I bought my first Boardman Road bike a few years ago I went in and asked to be sized up so that I could go home and order for home delivery (thereby taking advantage of an online deal promotion thingy they were running) anyway, he looks me up and down and says "you're a Large you mate", I say "erm, are you sure about that? I would still like to at least sit on the bike just to be sure" and he says "no need to. You are definitely a Large frame, no doubt about it". Basically he was too lazy to unchain a few different Boardman bikes so I could sit on them. The general impression was that he just wanted me to go away and stop pestering him about such trivialities.

Needless to say when the bike came it was WAY too big and uncomfortable. They let me ride it back to the store in order to exchange for a Medium. I then dealt with another guy who was great, very knowledgable and extremely enthusiastic about bikes, bike maintenance and the Boardman brand in general. He even indexed the gears and set the bike up brilliantly. The general impression was that he was just happy to chat about bikes and nothing was too much trouble.

Two guys. One store. Two radically different levels of knowledge, enthusiasm and customer service.

Just my two cents anyways!

I emailed the supplier of my bike asking for a replacement dustcap for my hollow SRAM BB axle, as I had found that it was open and I could stick my finger into it. They didn't understand what I meant, and asked for a photo, which I sent. Their response was "It's always been like that, you twit, that's how it's meant to be. Haven't you noticed before?" They worded it more politely than that, but I knew what they meant.

if you do get good service in Halfords then take the time to leave positive feedback (there should be web address/reference on the receipt). This is used by the store managers to praise / motivate / discipline the people working there, so it's import they know who the goods ones are.
