It's about 9 months old, Dual Core, 3gb Ram 8600gt M GC.

Tried CC Cleaner, Spybot and all seems ok.

Any ideas I don't know W7 all that well.

The MS Security centre was updating for a week and hanging but unistalled this

To begin with, run CCleaner again, go to Tools->Startup and have a look at what's being loaded at startup.

Ok I shall report back - Not sure what a lot of it is. I did notice that something called Dell Toolkit was using up about 30% mem.

Funny thouh last week it was fine

That suggests that something has changed in the last week or so. Sometimes if you install and then uninstall software, it doesn't uninstall completely and can still be running in the background. A lot of the entries on Startup will be look odd but you can look them up on Google to find out more.

I recently reloaded Windows 7 on a machine that I had purged of all the manufacture's crapware (or so I thought). The old System partition (complete Win 7, Office 2007, and other necessary software) was 23 GB; the clean install partition is now 16 GB.

I can really recommend a program called Autoruns to allow you to see and stop\start any programs that the PC automatically runs when it starts. You will be surprised by the number of things that load at startup without you being able to see them normally.

If you have identified a program (eg. Dell Toolkit) that seems to be using an usual amount of resources, you can deselect it, restart the PC and see if there are any problems or improvements. If there is a problem, then re-run Autoruns, and select the program again. It gives you a back out plan just in case you stop something that the PC needs.

How much memory is in use and is anything showing signs of hogging the cpu if you bring up task manager after it boots ?
If the disk drive is split into a c and d drive then how much out of how much space is currently used ?
What antivirus do you use.

Idling it's on what 4% CPU ? I have got Speedfan to monitor the CPU temp as I thought maybe overheating.

Other than that I have run msc services and disabled the windows media sharer which has had issues and updated the GC driver.

I'll see if it;s any better

Downloaded Passmark
It got a score of 430.

My Acer DC Laptop got 300 !!

Stumped

Go into system restore and select a restore point from before the point at which it slowed down.
Where is system restore ? use the help and support facility to find it.
Btw you didn't answer my question about how much ram does task manager think is being used or
what size the c partition is on your drive and how much is used up.
oh and WHAT ANTIVIRUS PACKAGE ?
