We are not all genetically same in build and stature thats why some people can ride a bike as if they are riding a GSXR1100 and others like thay have granite wheels fixed on the bike and go nowhere. There are some fit individuals out there cycling for their own end, be it training commuting etc. For me its purely for pleasure mixed with health and fitness in mind. Im in my early 50's but the girls at work say I look 45ish but my aches and pains tell me otherwise. Ride the bike for you and for the pleasure factor........what do you get out of it? It can only do you more good than harm....

For me it's.......my hobby and pastime and it stopped me smoking plus a feeling that I am not the only crackpot riding a soddin bike

regards

Bicyclist, you hit the nail squarely on head with that post, thanks.

Feel great tonight, legs tired, face glowing and really happy with my weekend's efforts.

New to the forum, so be gentle! Currently ride a mountain bike on the road twice a week, about 10 miles each ride, taking an hour. Go out for a walk twice a week, 2 miles in 30 minutes and do weights twice a week. Slightly overweight, work in an office so sat down all day, diet fairly good.

When I've been out for a ride, I always come back knackered. Today being a case in point, did 14 miles at 9am, now feel as if I've done a stage of the Tour, legs are like jelly. It took 1 hour 33.

Every time I'm out on the bike, I get passed by guys on road bikes who look like they're putting in no effort at all while I'm huffing, puffing and struggling uphill.

I'm going to buy a road bike in the spring, but don't want to end up "red faced" by my lack of fitness.

Can anyone help with some tips to get me in better shape?

I have a carbon fibre race bike and a full suspension mtb. I can go pretty fast on the road bike but on the mtb, I get overtaken by the growth of my own fingernails. Theres a hell of a difference between a road bike and a mountain bike in terms of speed. Being in good shape is an obvious factor if you wanna go fast on any bicycle tho.

Did the same ride today as last Saturday, managed to do it 15 minutes quicker. The major difference was a good breakfast. Proper fuelling is part of the answer here I think. Tired but happy tonight.
