I firmly believe that Cavendish can finish the Tour - he lugged himself over the mountains of the 2008 Giro, including that horrific time trial up Plan de Corones, so the Tour mountains ought to be a cakewalk by comparison. The difficulty for him, which I think yello alludes to, is the picking up of points in stages which don't really favour sprinters. And don't forget that Daniele Bennati beat him in two sprints in the Giro. Sure, Cavendish beat Bennati in three, but with Petacchi there too, things will be a lot livelier than the predictability of the 2008 Tour.
I think Cavendish can realistically expect to aim for the green jersey from 2010 - next year is about finding out everything he can, including seeing how he can cope in a breakaway on a mountain/transition stage, which may well be required to win the green in future years.
