Knocking sound ? bottom bracket area

Right the rear wheel is off and the noise definately comes from area of the cassette/freewheel (which says index freewheel something about long dnp on it).

I can move the cassette from side to side which seems to be making a knocking sound ... would that indicate that the freewheel is worn out? or loose?

There is no real adjustment for any play in the freewheel, it does sound like you need a new one, depending on how worn the chain is, you may need a new chain aswell, try a new freewheel and if the chain seems to jump/slip under presssure then a new chain is needed.

Thank you for your advice and knowledge ... its nice to get to the bottom of a noise on a bike. I will have to look for a new one, probably may as well get a chain ... I had meant to get out the chain wear thing and test out that chain anyway as I thought it might be a bit slack.

It could simply be a case of tightening your cone nuts/bearing. I tightened mine yesterday and no more knocking, or loose play of wheel on axel.

From what Summerdays has said it would seem the problem is more the freewheel rather than the rear hub.
