Hi All,

I've recently started training again, some jogging and some cross country cycling. I've not been overdoing it, but as I live in a hilly region, it's necessary to climb where ever I go! A few weeks ago I banged my knee, nothing serious, not even a bruise! But, I'm having some difficulty with my right knee; and it's become stiff, also slightly swollen to the left of the right knee and I'm having difficulty putting presure on the knee! A squat position makes the knee painful an very tight! I've used a knee support for a while and the knee seemed to recover somewhat? But soon reoccures when I do any cycling or jogging! Any advise or help? Has anyone experienced a similar knee problem? Would appreciate your thoughts before I consult the medical profession.

Thanks

M

Only one solution, I'm afraid: (well, four actually!)

RICE

Rest

Ice

Compression

Elevation

...and I would add Ibuprofen.

Go and see a decent physio - no one can tell what the issue is properly via a online forum, you'll get anecdotal advice at best.

Having said that RICE can be reasonable advice if it's nothing serious

Bike set up properly? Common cause of knee issues if no specific injury, or the rather non specific patello-femoral pain syndrome

A small bang on the knee can cause hidden problems - the swelling in particular makes me think that you need to get something done. RICE will only get you so far. And my consultant (and physio as well) thinks that the vast majority of commercially available knee supports are only good for keeping your knees warm.

Yes, you could be correct? I'm pretty sure it was the bang on the knee that's at the root cause of my problem? if the knee shows no improvement by Monday next! I'll seek medical attention.

As a youngster you should recover very quickly with little more than rest, but be aware that knee damage sustained at a young age can return to haunt you in later life. I know, I can no longer run at all now due to an arthritic knee - all down to an early injury I had almost forgotton about.

Edit: Sorry, as a Newbie I misunderstood the Junior Member tag and it was only when I recently became one myself that I realised. It's nice to be a junior again after all those years!!
