I was doing some leg work out in the gym about 2 years ago the type of machine you sit on and there is a weighted bar that rest along your feet. You raise and lower your legs I was lift about 20kg and did 12reps my right knee started to hurt. I knew it was time to stop. It still hurts to this day.
This is probably over your head by a huge margin but, leg extension machines aren't meant to be supported by your feet.

The machine killed me. Do you know the one that works your thighs ?

When I jumped from the odd 28miles to 45 miles per Saturday and Sunday I started to get right knee pain, then left knee pain. I think it was simple overuse and it went away.

Although I am now getting regular pain/stinging on the outside of the left knee, it feels like it's at the fibula head. I can cycle through it, the times it hurts most are: when lifting left leg onto the pedal from a stop, when climbing over the bath into the shower (i.e. raising the left leg). It takes 24 hours to go usually, but will come back after 10 miles, this is even after a 3 day rest.

What does your doctor or physio say? You may need an exercise programme to sort out an imbalance, or there may be some cartilage damage in there

Me? Doctor  Not seen yet, mainly because I can't get an appointment to fit in with work, and secondly because I already have ibuprofen which is their default solution.

Rest, ice, elevation.

Always take knee pain seriously, I walked twenty five miles recently last few miles were in a lot of pain with one knee but I couldn't give up and needed to finish it.

Immediately started an icing regime every two hours, but I found the thing that helped the most was stretching and cycling (low intensity).

Perhaps start a stretching regime before you go out on the ride, if it hurts again it's time to find out why it's hurting.

Cheap £1 knee braces from Pound land are good to have, helps dodgy knees feel more supported, though the Pound land ones eventually they start riding up whilst cycling.

A little self diagnoses may help. The cause seems likely to be connected with over use and as someone above suggests the IT band would be the usual suspect, I have attached a guide to the anatomy of the leg so you can see what this is. A simple way to relieve the pressure while sleeping is to put a small pillow between your knees. There are also some specific stretches for the area the IT band gets caught in.

Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. or Rice. Compression comes from the knee brace or an ace bandage. I read that somewhere, and it has worked for me. I also heard an emergency room doctor say that when I took some fellow that fell at work to the hospital. He also told him to take ibuprofen.

Thank you all for chiming in! I have now taken 3 days complete rest, first two taking ibuprofen for the anti-inflammatory effect. Though being pain-free, I keep imagining a strange sensation in my knee, though at this point it might as well be me concentrating too much on it.

As to the exact diagnosis - it is most certainly an over-use issue, however not an IT-band related one. Discomfort is located along the medial edge of my right patella, although the precise localisation is rather difficult to pinpoint. Perhaps cleat position is at fault. On Wednesday I am scheduled for a bike fit at my local shop, we'll see what they say.

In any case, I will attempt a rather easy 25-km route tomorrow with just one climb. If it goes well, I have halved intensity of my rides for a couple of weeks, in the hopes that the reduced strain will help recovery without loosing too much fitness in the process.

Thanks to you all for the wonderful feedback!
