Don't underestimate the pulling force of your deraileur. I spent many hours trying to get one off with pliers and wire and everything (apart from the additional tool) and then read it was imperative to take tension out by putting a piece of wire (I used some from a coat hanger) a few links either side to slacken it off. A shoelace on either side and it popped open straight away.

The tools worth having, but the knowledge is good for if you get stuck out and about. I carry a bit of coat hanger in my pack just to be on the safe side.

Thats the hack I've seen but couldn't be ar3ed typing that out on my phone. An old spoke would work too.

Hahahaha! I tried ALL of those methods, too. Still wouldn't budge.

Think mine was BBB but it opens and closes. Makes things quicker, and the tool wasn't expensive

On the road I would rely on the chain ring and a rock trick. I have only had to do it once, but it worked.

Why were you undoing the link? Sounds like you trashed a perfectly good link doing something uneccessary to me.

They’ve been making them much tighter of late , with the burr, to allow for multiple uses, without risk of litigation.

I recently got myself this one. It's miniature so takes up less room in the saddlebag should you need to carry it about.
I found its alot easier to pinch the plates together when squeezing the links to separate.

You have to compress it before sliding the two places outwards. That's what the recess shown in the picture is there for, to prevent some sort of self-disengagement. Squeeze together, then slide. If you do this with you fingers, watch out, it pinches a bit of skin when it eventually slides

Yes squeezing the sides together makes it easier.

To close the link, get everything set up, have the link in the top off the chain run then bang the pedals forward.
