As you may or may not know I am selling my kinesis Racelight and the recall issue has just been pointed out to me of which I was completely unaware. So with some urgency I dropped the forks out to check them. I can see no stickers and although the steerer tube is black its my opinion that its some kind of plastic wrapping as the tube sounds metallic to me giving off a metallic "ting" when tapping it and you can see alloy at the top of the tube. I assume then that its alloy and not carbon. Your opinions please folks.

You could contact the suppliers Upgrade Bikes. They were very helpful when I faced the same problem, supplied new forks in just 2 days. They provide what looks like a comprehensive diagram here - http://shop.upgradebikes.co.uk/Cata...CELIGHT-T-CARBON-FORK-2003-2009-RECALL-NOTICE

Im pretty certain the tube is alloy as you can see from the top of the tube and the metallic sound.

It appears to be a carbon steerer, not alloy. The thing you can see in the top of the tube is the steerer expander bung, which is not a component part of the fork.

But how do you explain the metallic sound when tapping the shaft ?

Surely a carbon tube would give off a dull hollow sort of sound ?

Has it got one of these Star Nuts fitted, if so it will be alloy, a Star Nut should not be fitted to a carbon steerer.

If it has something like this below fitted, its probably carbon, but you can fit them to alloy, they are easily removable, so f it is one of these take it out for further investigation.

If it looks like carbon, it probably is carbon. Unless you can upload a file of the sound it makes, your impression of what sounds like alu might very well be different to others.

He's already posted a pic which shows a carbon steerer bung installed in the top of the steerer tube.

Yes I had difficulty deciding what was fitted, hence my post
I think you are right with " if it looks like carbon it probably is" I have never seen a black alloy steerer.

Contact Kinesis for new forks if there is even a teeny bit of doubt. Someone died if I recall as a result of a Kinesis fork failing
