If you do buy one watch what you buy. Many of the starter drum kits are pretty poor. We bought a CB kit:

It's pretty sturdy and comes with Remo skins, which are better than you get on most starter kits. The cymbals are terrible but it's the same on any starter kit, they're just something to aim at. You can buy decent ones later if he takes to it, but they'll cost you more than the rest of the kit! The CB kits also comes in metallic silver, which looks great. £200 or the Mapex Tornado, which is basically the same kit, for £220.

The Premier Olympic is very similar to the CB, slightly better in a couple of points, and costs £240.

Performance Percussion, Session Pro, Boston are not as good, or in some cases just not as good value and a lot of the other kits you get are crap!

Yeah, that's the killer. We're not too bad as we can put it in the front lounge and it's not really in anyone's way, but it's still obtrusive at times and you can't escape the noise!
