Keyhole surgery - Knee

My daughter had that done 5 weeks ago and she was given 6 weeks of rest.... no walking and certainly not cycling. It seems that she could walk without pain right from the start but the risk of developing arthritis in a few years time in too big a risk.

Don't want to scare you but read this

I really wouldn't bother reading that, pile of daily mail style scaremongering crap, especially the bit about NSAIDs - ibuprofen and the like. It's obviously not written by a medical professional. As long as you follow the rehab instructions carefully having the surgery should help delay/reduce osteoarthritis - with an old injury like that you will get/already have arthritis so I'd get the op sooner rather than later and miss the ride if necessary.

Thanks for all the advise guys

but i won't be passing up on the ride - had pre- op this morning, consultant informed me that the ride should be no problems at all as its a total of 16weeks after the athroscopy - thats 6-8weeks for full recovery and a further 8-10 weeks of training.

Had cartillage repaired by microfracture in September, six weeks on crutches with no wait bearing. Surgeon advised to turn the legs over on a stationary bike one week after the op and gradually build up to what is comfortable. Had physio throughout and he was happy with bike work which complimented his exercises. Five days after getting off crutches was back on road bike with club on Sunday run. It was tough at the start as despite my best efforts with the post-op programme, I suffered a lot of muscle waste. It took about six weeks to get strength back in my weak leg but have had no problems since.
While this was my experience, I would suggest that it is possible to take part in your event - follow your post op physio exactly as directed and train hard as soon as you can after the op.

Good luck, well done with the weight loss and keep us up to date with your progress

I think the OP is having a wash out, no microfracture...he probably won't even need crutches after a few days. After my second op (a tidy up of cartilage and a jab), I only used the twigs to get out of the hospital and I took them once to the supermarket a couple of days later

Good luck jowwy, I totally misunderstood your intial post (as did others I think), if the charity rides not for 4 months, you should be ok, you need to do simple physio to stop the quads shutting down/wasting though, static bike after a couple of weeks if you can. Get Bupa to pay for PT

Bupa are paying for the full shabang - but i'm have a bone scrape, no wash out - surface of the knee joint is very jaggered after a knee break 6 yrs ago that never fully repaired.

Ah a chondroplasty...if it is really tatty in several places, talk to the surgeon about a hyaluronic acid jab while you are under, helped my knee settle down no end (although it started to get sore again  )

From my experience, the surgery will be more sore than you expect if they are tidying the bone

You'll be fine - keep to the exercises and physio
I agree, it's easy to let these slip
I had an same op last year, and afterwards I was pretty good with exercises. I did find cycling one of the best things for recover so its a good excuse to get out on bike and train for your ride.
Good luck with recovery.

Update: Knee is recovering very well - still some stiffness and swelling around the knee, a bit if irritation from the stitches. Got first physio session booked and having stitches removed next friday.

Hoping the physio will allow me to go on the stationary bike to aid recovery

Gonna take it easy tho vickster - dont want to cause any other issues an extra week off the bike is better than rushing things.
