Sometimes when I am tired after coming home from work I sit down to watch a programme on TV I fall asleep and miss all or some of the programme that I do not want to miss

Have any of you got any tips or advice on how to stay awake when you are tired ?

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Hit the record button and baton down the hatches , watch the programme on another day when you feel good ..
iron tablet 3 times a day
I had a severe vitamin D deficiency that caused tiredness, poor immune system, lack of calcium absorption and stomach problems.
If in doubt see a doctor.

If work is an office job, you could try getting some fresh air when you get home: e.g. half an hour of brisk walking which should get the lead out of your legs after a day in front of a computer screen.

Re-reading the OP's question, I'd like to apologise for flippant comment above - if you are indeed falling asleep mid-evening after a normal-day-at-the-office or whatever - at least for more than a little nap, then providing you are getting a sensible amount of sleep generally, might be worth a check out at the doc's.
Obviously If you're doing 12 hour days of hard labour, long driving or being kept awake by babies or worries, then you are just tired and it's to be expected really

A friend of mine was always falling off to sleep and thought he might be narcoleptic, but after a night of being hooked up to a monitor in hospital he was told he wasn't. The quack told him that some people just need more sleep than others. Unless you have something else going on, have you been checked for diabetes? It could be diet, but if you at all worried have a word with your GP.

I often have an afternoon nap, especially if I have spent the morning cycling. I'm allowed to, being an OAP.
