After an epic 17 pages on my question about me struggling to climb hills (please see the beginners forum), out of interest I was wondering what gearing you have fitted to your bikes?

My bike is fitted with a double compact 50/34 with a 11-25 rear cassette.

How about you?

50/34 on the front, and 11-25 on the rear, I think, not too sure about the rear.

My friend is on a heavier bike than I am, with a normal double (not a compact) and we're touring to Strasbourg, I'm going to tally the amount of times that he exclaims "I'VE RUN OUT OF GEARS!" he's a bit of a monster/ farm boy powerhouse, so he'll manage ;)

I was going to say 50/34...but ive changed the 34 to a 40...so 50/40 and 11-25 on the rear.

Its mostly flat here, with hills a few miles to the west, so no need for a compact. That said, i did 1000 ft of climbing on my monday ride. Funny how it adds up ;) You'd never know it if you lived here..

I've got a BSA 20".

It has a Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub.
It had a 46 tooth chainring and a 24 tooth sprocket.

Top gear worked out as 52".
Second gear worked out at 39" and
Lowest worked out at 29".

The bike weighs 34 lb.

( 1 / 34 ) x 1000 = 29.4.

My seventy four year old mother rode it up 10% hills.

If your bike is 22 lb and it has a 45" gear, a little old lady could ride it up a 10% ;)
