Just had back wheel re-spoked.

Just wondered what peoples thoughts were. I recently purchased a giant defy second hand, had a run in with pot holes on old kent road.
I have just recently had the wheel re-spoked, will this just be a short term answer should I look to re-place the back wheel at the earliest possible opportunity or from your experience will the wheel last a while now it has been re-spoked. From my own experience (only having had bikes with crap wheels) this only a short term answer and wheel wont last even though its been re-spoked. If it helps roads where I live look like the surface of the moon.

Do you mean completely rebuilt with new spokes, or just the broken spokes replaced?

It could be a rogue spoke went south, but it's often the case that when spokes start to go their neighbours won't be far behind.

The only way to tell is to ride it a bit and see, but don't be too surprised if others start popping.

already started looking at cost of replacement. Typical south london pot holes or more to the point craters

I had a pair of fairly pricey Easton's where I had a spoke break a few times. In the end got the wheel replaced under warranty.
I also have a Spa wheel that suffered a broken spoke. A few years later it's holding well and true.

What's the spoke count of the wheel and how heavy are you? If you hit a whoppa then it's not going to do the wheel much good no matter what you ride on but a good strong wheel for crap terrain might help. If you have a local bike project a used wheel, 36 spokes, won't cost a mint. The one I work at charges about £15-£20 for a half decent one. Not much point in buying an expensive wheel for crap roads.

I has a rear commuting wheels made up by my decent LBS. It had cheap Shimano hub, a tough rim and thick butted spokes.
It proved to be very durable and reliable and Acera hub never missed a beat.

I would assume it will be fine until the evidence points otherwise. An obvious thing to consider is that higher spoke count wheels generally fare better. If rim brake then you’ll likely wear the rim out before you need to worry about more spokes.

Avoid riding through pot holes is obvious advice.

Change the wheel for a stronger one and increase tyre width.

It depends on the wheel.

Often, once one spoke goes, others rapidly follow, either because they were on the way out anyway, or because of the extra stress from the missing spoke.

Alternatively wheels can run for years after a spoke replacement - one of our tandem wheels has a spoke replaced but continued perfectly for decades despite the huge load on it.

You can't tell, though as others have pointed out, likely the more spokes the better chance you have.

My policy, as someone lacking the skills to build or decently true wheels, is to buy strong wheels and keep a replacement ready to swap in should repairs be needed.
