I think it's most important that your hood position is at its best, as this is where you'll be spending most of your time.

+1 when i 1st set up my reach i always test the feel of the hand positions for comfort , mine are fairly flat on compact drop bars which works for me , from the front mine are like this picture, i have more of a drop in seat to handle bar now but you get the idea..

There's nothing surprising about being uncomfortable on drop bars - human wrists and shoulders were not designed to support weight. It takes some riders ages to find an acceptable position and some never do.
